First-Year Seminar Registration

Get ready to choose your first Occidental course and learn how to register for your First-Year Seminar.

All first-year students at Occidental take two First-Year Seminar (FYS) courses—one in the fall and one in the spring of their first year. These small, discussion-based classes help you explore big ideas, sharpen your writing, and connect with professors and classmates early on.

Before You Register

Only new first-year students register for an FYS. Transfer and exchange students are exempt from this requirement.
You’ll register for one FYS course in the fall semester. The spring seminar will be assigned later in the year.

How to Prepare

1. Browse Course Options

Visit Course Counts.
From the landing screen, choose Fall [year] under Semester and First Year Seminars under Subject.
Review course descriptions and note the 4-digit Course Reference Number (CRN) for 5–10 seminars that interest you, ranked in order of preference.

2. Plan Your Top Choices

Make a list of your top seminars (5–10 options).
Keep those CRNs handy—you’ll need them when registration opens.

How to Register

When registration opens in my��:

Log in at with your �� credentials.
From the Academics box, select Add or Drop Classes.
Choose [Fall Year] Semester and click Submit.
Enter your six-digit PIN: [insert PIN].
Type in the four-digit CRN for your preferred seminar and click Submit Changes.
If the course is full, select your next choice and repeat.

When you successfully register, you’ll see your seminar listed under Current Schedule—this confirms your enrollment.

Tip: Registration moves quickly. Have your list of CRNs ready before registration opens.

If You Miss Registration

Students who don’t register by the deadline will be placed in a seminar by the Core Program. Every student is guaranteed a spot in a First-Year Seminar.

Didn’t Get Your First Choice?

Because seminars are intentionally small, many fill up quickly. If your preferred course is full:

Register for another available FYS—everyone must be enrolled in one.
Keep checking Course Counts in case a seat opens later.
If you see an open seat, you can contact the Core Program to ask about switching.

Many students find that the seminar they didn’t expect to take becomes one of their favorite classes!

Want to review your registration? To confirm your FYS enrollment:

Log into .
Select Grades & Academic Records in the Academics box.
Choose Class Schedule/Registered Courses—your FYS should appear there.
